The southern Bukit Peninsula is home to some of the most spectacular coastline in Bali. Towering limestone cliffs, turquoise water and hidden coves make Uluwatu very different from the busy beaches of Seminyak and Canggu.

Many visitors are surprised to discover how many beautiful beaches are located within a short drive of each other. If you stay in Ungasan near Melasti Beach, you can easily explore several of Uluwatu’s most famous beaches in a single day.

You can also explore more nearby attractions, beach clubs and restaurants in our Uluwatu location guide.

Melasti Beach – One of the Best Beaches in Uluwatu

Melasti Beach is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Uluwatu area. The dramatic cliff road leading down to the beach is famous in its own right, winding between towering limestone walls before opening to a wide stretch of white sand and clear blue water.

Compared with many Bali beaches, Melasti feels spacious and clean, with calm water that is perfect for swimming during most tides. It’s also home to some of the Bukit Peninsula’s most popular beach clubs, making it a great place to spend the entire day.

Beach clubs and restaurants nearby include Savaya, Palmilla, Minoo Beach Club and Sundays Beach Club.

Because of its central location on the Bukit Peninsula, Melasti Beach is also an ideal base for exploring the rest of Uluwatu.

Guests staying at Villa Carina Bali are just minutes from Melasti Beach and many of the Bukit Peninsula’s most popular beach clubs.

Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang is one of the most famous beaches in Bali. The beach became internationally known after appearing in the film Eat Pray Love, and it remains one of the most photographed spots in Uluwatu.

Visitors access the beach through a narrow rock staircase between cliffs, which opens onto a small but picturesque stretch of sand. While the beach itself is not large, the setting is beautiful and the surf break just offshore attracts experienced surfers from around the world.

Because of its popularity, Padang Padang can become quite busy during the middle of the day. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best time to visit if you want to enjoy the beach at its most peaceful.

Bingin Beach

Bingin Beach has long been known as one of Uluwatu’s classic surf beaches. Years ago it had a relaxed, authentic atmosphere with small guesthouses and cliffside cafés overlooking the surf break.

However, in recent years the area has changed significantly. Much of the cliffside development that once gave Bingin its unique character has been removed or redeveloped as authorities enforce building regulations along the coastline.

Because of this, the area can feel quite different from what many older travel guides describe. The beach itself is still beautiful and the surf break remains popular, but visitors expecting the old “hidden surf village” vibe may find that Bingin is no longer quite the same as it once was.

Today, Bingin is often more of a quick stop for surfers or sunset views rather than a place where many travellers spend an entire day.

Nyang Nyang Beach

If you’re looking for a quieter beach experience in Uluwatu, Nyang Nyang Beach is one of the Bukit Peninsula’s hidden gems.

Located near Uluwatu Temple, this beach requires a longer walk down the cliff to reach the sand. Because of the access, far fewer visitors make the trip, which means the beach often feels peaceful and untouched.

The coastline here stretches for a long distance, making it perfect for walking, photography or simply enjoying the ocean without crowds. It’s also one of the best places in the area to experience the dramatic scale of Uluwatu’s cliffs.

Thomas Beach

Thomas Beach is another lesser-known beach located between Padang Padang and Uluwatu Temple. A staircase leads down from the road to a wide sandy beach that is often much quieter than its famous neighbours.

The water is usually clear and calm, and small beach cafés serve drinks and simple meals throughout the day. For travellers who want a relaxed beach without large crowds, Thomas Beach is a great option.

Where to Stay Near Uluwatu’s Best Beaches

Because the Bukit Peninsula is relatively compact, many of Uluwatu’s best beaches are within a short drive of each other. Staying in Ungasan or near Melasti Beach allows visitors to easily explore beaches like Padang Padang, Nyang Nyang and Thomas Beach while still being close to restaurants, beach clubs and sunset viewpoints.

Private villas near Melasti Beach offer a particularly convenient base for exploring the coastline.
